Forest
During my BA (hons) Fine Art degree at Newcastle University I built a practice exploring landscapes using site specific natural materials. I began collecting materials for my work predominantly from forests, assembling multiple elements within each piece.
For my degree show I exhibited two installation pieces.
I explored the forest floor of the Pine woodland at Varc. Approximately 150 ceramics made from clay from the site were woven in to a paper sculpture. On the paper were drawings using Unison Colour pastels of different elements of the landscape. As well as prints and marks made using seedheads collected from Varc. Tree branches created the frame for the weaving.
Along the Japanese paper piece are woodblock prints made using blocks collected from a fallen tree, and a collage of red birch bark. Porcelain casts of seedheads and bronze cast crocus stamens hung behind the paper, casting shadows and completing the composition when sunlight shone through the piece.
