Parrita

April 2024

I took part in a month long residency at The Mauser Foundation, Parrita, Costa Rica. This was an incredible opportunity to explore a totally new landscape, a new language, and new materials.

From my desk over looking the jungle I saw hummingbirds, toucans and squirrel monkeys. I experimented using local clays and explored painting and staining paper with Achiote berry paste.

Every morning I sat under the Almond trees and painted them. During my 5 month solo trip to Mexico City following the residency, the Almond trees felt like a constant travel companion and have since become a recurring symbol within my work.

Work inspired by this residency and using the Achiote paper was shown in On Dreaming at Northern Print the following Spring.
